One of the key design approaches for non-infill artificial turf is combining relatively stiff straight fibers with resilient curly fibers.
The two components can perform complementary functions:
Straight fibers
- Provide primary vertical support
- Contribute to ball interaction and visual appearance
- Help maintain pile height
Curly fibers
- Provide lateral support
- Improve recovery after compression
- Help distribute localized loads
- Contribute to cushioning characteristics
A commonly used design concept is a straight-to-curly ratio around 60:40 or 70:30, but this should not be treated as a universal specification.
For example:
- A football-oriented system may emphasize vertical support.
- A multi-purpose school field may use a more balanced configuration.
- A recreational landscape application may require much less structural complexity.
The correct ratio should be validated through system-level testing.
