Pile Height Should Match the Application

Pile height is another frequently misunderstood specification.

Higher pile does not automatically mean a better or more comfortable turf surface.

For non-infill systems, excessive pile height can potentially increase the tendency toward:

  • Fiber bending
  • Surface instability
  • Uneven ball interaction
  • More difficult maintenance

Typical application ranges can be considered as follows:

Football

Approximately 35–50 mm, depending on the sport, system design, and applicable performance requirements.

School Multi-Purpose Areas

Approximately 25–35 mm can provide a practical balance between durability, comfort, and maintenance.

Recreational Courts

Approximately 20–30 mm may be appropriate for certain applications.

Landscaping and Residential Areas

Approximately 20–35 mm is commonly used, depending on the desired appearance and traffic level.

These ranges should be treated as design references rather than universal requirements.

For certified sports installations, the final pile height should be selected according to the relevant sport-specific performance criteria.
