The appropriate repair depends on the severity and cause.
Minor Surface Wrinkles
If the wrinkle is small and there is no seam failure:
- Wait for moderate temperatures.
- Allow the turf to relax.
- Gently brush the fibers.
- Inspect the backing and edges.
- Check whether the wrinkle disappears after temperature stabilization.
Avoid aggressively pulling the turf during extreme heat.
Localized Bubbles
For a persistent localized bubble:
- Identify the direction of movement.
- Check whether the seam or edge has released.
- Lift the affected section if necessary.
- Remove failed adhesive or debris.
- Allow the turf to relax.
- Reposition without excessive tension.
- Rebond the affected area using the manufacturer’s recommended adhesive system.
- Apply appropriate pressure during curing.
If the backing itself has permanently deformed, simple brushing or repositioning may not be sufficient.
Large-Scale or Repeated Wrinkling
If wrinkles repeatedly appear across a large area, do not simply keep pulling the turf flat.
The underlying cause should be investigated.
Possible causes include:
- Incorrect installation tension
- Insufficient substrate preparation
- Poor backing dimensional stability
- Improper seam construction
- Excessive perimeter restraint
- Moisture beneath the turf
- Thermal movement beyond the installation design
- Incorrect adhesive selection
In these cases, partial or complete reinstallation may be more appropriate than repeated cosmetic repairs.
