Why Can Non-Infill Turf Maintain Traction in Wet Conditions?

1. Multiple Fiber Contact Points

Smooth ceramic tiles, concrete and other hard surfaces can become slippery when water creates a continuous film between the footwear and the surface.

Artificial turf behaves differently.

The shoe sole interacts with numerous synthetic fibers rather than one continuous flat surface. Meanwhile, water can move through the gaps between fibers and then through the drainage openings in the backing.

This can help maintain traction in wet conditions.

But there is an important qualification:

Good wet traction depends on the entire drainage and surface system, not simply on having synthetic grass fibers.

If water cannot drain through the backing or base, standing water can still create a slippery surface.
