Instead of using a fixed number of hours, a simple site inspection is often more meaningful.
Check 1: Surface water
There should be no significant standing water or continuous water film.
Check 2: Foot traffic
Walk across several representative areas.
If water is visibly displaced around the feet or the surface remains saturated, further recovery time may be appropriate.
Check 3: Fiber roots
Separate the fibers and inspect the area close to the backing.
Check 4: Low points
Pay particular attention to:
- Corners
- Seams
- Goal areas
- Field edges
- Low spots
- Areas around drainage channels
These locations may remain wet longer than the rest of the surface.
For professional sports fields, reopening decisions should follow the facility’s operational and performance requirements rather than an arbitrary drying-time claim.
