  • Green runway propels upcoming RAF exhibition to success

    A 150 ft long runway, made entirely from artificial grass is currently being installed at RAF Scampton ahead of a new exhibition to mark 100 years of the UK’s aerial force.

    The UK’s leading supplier of artificial grass, LazyLawn® will also be installing a red carpet as part of the event ready for welcoming guests at its official opening on 5th April.

    The exhibition named, Lincolnshire: Bastion in the Air, is being installed in the Dambuster hangar and will feature the recreation of part of a World War I airfield in France, including three replica aircraft, to highlight the work carried out in constructing aircraft at the time.

    LazyLawn® has installed 600m2 of its green ‘Fresh’ grass to form the runway and will also be installing approximately 120m2 of red carpet to complete the space.

    Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Lincolnshire County Council and West Lindsey District Council, the Lincolnshire: Bastion in the Air exhibition is due to run until the end of August.

    In addition to the dip remediation, there was an 820 metre stretch of resin-bound bark-effect perimeter installed – in black for a stark contrast to the lush green of the pitch.  With Steve’s 10-strong team enlisted as needed for concreting, grass installation, resin bound mulch and white-line marking, the project began at the start of July and saw its conclusion in late October.  Normally requiring 300 tonnes of in-fill prior to artificial grass installation, the additional dip fill meant over 530 tonnes of MOT type 1 aggregate and 6mm-to-dust granite was delivered across the project.

    “Steve and his team are a credit to your company.” continues Rachel.  “He takes time and would never cut corners – that’s why he continues to be our preferred contractor”.

    The 7-a-side pitch was fitted with LazyLawn Vitality product in a 30mm depth in a project that took just over three months to complete. The install was slightly hampered by contending with British wintry conditions, the additional complication of groundworks and surface preparation and levelling out a natural dip that was discovered in the area. The surrounding fencing had been removed and there was additional remediation of the ground and replacement of the pin curbs to rectify.

    “We’ve worked with Steve and his team at LazyLawn and Xternal Worx since 2016 – the quality and the choice of product is superb.” explains Head Teacher Rachel Beckett, who was keen to ensure the high quality and finish had continuity across the playgrounds and sports surfaces at the Academy.  She also wanted to make sure the right product and specification was selected for purpose and budget. She continues: “Other suppliers were keen to push 3G and 4G pitches but Steve understood exactly what we really needed – this is a pitch for small children, after all!”. 

    Rachel and her grounds team were also impressed with the striped finish the Vitality 30mm created. With the fence removal, she could ensure the view from her office was unencumbered, perfect for her to enjoy the open space and keep an eye on the sporting activities of the pupils easily.

  • An Alternative to a Crushed Rock Base

    One alternative that is used by some artificial grass installers is the innovative Ultra Base System. Not only is this panel system ideal for sloped installs, rooftops, and limited access areas, but it can be used on virtually any job to streamline installation, reduce site disruption, and save turf installers money.

    A Base for Unique Applications

    There are many instances in which a crushed rock sub base is not an ideal option. For instance, creating a base for artificial grass on a sloped area is not really feasible with loose stone and Ultra Base panels represent an ideal alternative. Stone is also too heavy and inconvenient for many rooftop applications and the lighter weight Ultra Base panels excel by providing both structural support and excellent drainage. Plus, like many spaces, it is often impossible or impractical to dump tons of stone on a street and figure out how to get it to a rooftop. Ultra Base panels are ideal for these “limited access” spaces including courtyards, inner city spaces, and existing patio and pool areas where damage to the space is a major concern.

  • Sub-base Compacting

    Once you’ve decided on the appropriate sub-base material, it’s time to shake a leg…and everything else too! After you’ve spread the sub-base material over your installation site, your best option for a proper installation is to use a vibratory-plate compactor. You may also opt to use a roller and a hand tamper to get those hard-to-reach areas and tight corners. Oh, and be sure to wet down your sub-base as you’re compacting it to help remove any voids or air spaces.

    Adding a sub-base may seem like a lot of extra work. But like anything worth doing, it’s worth doing well. Installing artificial grass the right way the first time will be beneficial in the long run.   • The Pros and Cons of Various Grasses for Football Fields

    So is the shape of the blades of turf such as the stuff on football fields. At Szgrass, we have a variety of shapes, and they each have their pros and cons. Here’s a snapshot of some of the options:

    Flat blade: This is a good all-purpose option as it offers good grip and is easy to care for. It is also fairly common and prevalent. The one drawback, though, is that it can be horrific when the sun shines.

    S-shaped blade: Provides plenty of support and cushion, which could reduce the risk of injuries for the players. It also is very real light and helps make the field feel better to play on. That said, it may be costlier than the flat blade, and should be regularly brushed to keep it from looking messy and to keep it in shape.

    W blade: A very strong and durable blade It is extremely easy to maintain, which is beneficial for fast-paced fields. It also provides decent support and traction for players. Unfortunately, the downside of synthetic turf is that it can be very hot and uncomfortable to play on when the sun is beating down on it.
