Why Do Non-Infill Turf Seams Fail?

Several factors can contribute to seam failure.

1. Thermal Expansion and Contraction

Artificial turf contains polymeric materials, and these materials respond to temperature changes.

Large temperature fluctuations can therefore create repeated mechanical stress in:

  • Turf backing
  • Adhesive
  • Seam tape
  • Edge restraints
  • Substrate interfaces

The risk becomes more significant when the turf is installed under excessive tension or without appropriate installation procedures.

2. Moisture and Adhesive Degradation

Water exposure can affect certain adhesive systems over time.

This is why professional non-infill turf should use a backing and adhesive system designed for the intended climate.

For humid or rainy environments, resistance to hydrolysis and moisture exposure is particularly important.

3. Substrate Movement

A damaged seam is sometimes only the visible symptom of a deeper problem.

If the concrete, asphalt or aggregate base settles unevenly, the turf may be forced to bridge a height difference. The resulting shear stress can eventually cause the seam to separate.

Therefore, always inspect the substrate when a seam repeatedly fails in the same location.

4. Installation Quality

Many premature seam failures can be related to installation rather than the turf yarn itself.

Important installation factors include:

  • Correct adhesive selection
  • Appropriate adhesive quantity
  • Clean bonding surfaces
  • Correct open time
  • Uniform pressure
  • Adequate curing time
  • Proper turf alignment
  • Correct temperature and humidity conditions

A high-quality turf product cannot fully compensate for poor installation.
