Severe Seam Damage: Cut Out and Replace the Damaged Section

If the seam has suffered extensive backing damage, yarn loss, or a visible hole, local gluing may not restore the original structural integrity.

In this situation, section replacement is usually more reliable.

Repair process

1. Mark the damaged area

Create straight cutting lines around the damaged section.

2. Cut carefully

Separate the yarns before cutting so that healthy surrounding tufts are not unnecessarily damaged.

3. Prepare the substrate

Remove loose materials and check whether the underlying base has settlement, cracking or unevenness.

If the substrate itself has moved, repairing only the turf will not solve the underlying problem.

4. Match the replacement turf

The replacement piece should match the original turf as closely as possible in:

  • Yarn height
  • Yarn shape
  • Color
  • Density
  • Dtex
  • Backing construction
  • Direction of installation

5. Install the replacement piece

Use compatible seam tape and adhesive to connect the new section with the existing turf.

6. Groom the yarn

After initial curing, brush the yarn around the repair area to minimize the visual appearance of the joint.

For professional sports facilities, repairs should ideally be performed by trained installers because poor alignment can affect both appearance and ball behavior.
